I can't believe...

..how much I am enjoying On Beauty!!! Who would have thought it? I never expected it to be quite so funny and entertaining, so big thanks to Girl With The Mask and Milla for persuading me to get it down from the TBR shelf at long last and blow the dust off it. I read 100 pages last night, am loving it. I'm rather stunned to see those words in black and white, having assumed otherwise (see previous post and comments if I am confusing you.)
Must confess, I did find it slightly disconcerting to discover that there was a character called Kiki in the book, as Kiki has become synonymous with funny parrot remarks in our house, since my eldest has been on her Enid Blyton love-in. "Wipe your feet, blow your nose, wipe your nose, blow your feet, what a pity, what a pity" etc. And if you don't know what I'm on about, shame on you! (Oh, all right, Kiki the parrot is the star of such greats as The Castle of Adventure, The Mountain of Adventure etc.) Ahh, the bit on the train where cheeky Kiki stuffs toffee wrappers into the sleeping old man's pocket! Ahem. Anyway, moving on.

Change of subject. I've got myself a new sporting challenge lined up for after the Race for Life (June 1st - still time to sponsor me if you are feeling generous...). I'm a bit scared about it but quite excited too. Anyone want to have a guess? Go on, someone flatter me and say the London marathon...

Ahhh, I can always count on you!
Surprisingly, it's not the London marathon though.

Funnily enough I have just finished re-reading the Island and the Castle of adventure. I haven't read all of them in the series so I'm looking forward to reading the rest (obviously I'm buying them for when son is old enough to read them you understand).

I always loved those ones too. Is Island the one with Huffin and Puffin? (or is that Sea, I can't remember). Anyway, all corkers. Your son will thank you for them one day!

Oh I loved Kiki too. And you're enjoying 'On Beauty' eh? Good, maybe I'll pick that next.

I know! You intend to sneak onto the track for the last 50m of the London Olympics Marathon, push Paula Radcliffe over onto her bum, then burst through the finishing tape arms out-stretched yelling in triumph?

Doh, I did it again! Your mention of Blyton reminded me of my favourite EB series when I was a kid, which was the Five Find-Outers And Dog books, and then I went to Google and then Amazon... and now I have bought two of them... but all in one book and only costing £2.76 in all, so it's OK. I think. ;o)

Just finished reading Mister Pip btw. Brilliant recommendation, thanks for that. Traumatic though.

Is it one of the Cancer Research 10k's that you're thinking of tackling? Or are you trying out for Beijing ;-)

PS: Might dig my copy of 'On Beauty' out of the TBR ~ I loved 'White Teeth', but 'The Autograph Man' is one of the few books I've abandoned midway (and that was on audiobook too ~ how disinterested do you have to be to cease listening?!)

JJ - yes, do pick it - we can have a high-brow literary debate about it at the Novel racers' meet. Or, of course, we could talk about how beautiful the cover is, and whose round it is anyway, instead?!

Settingsons - you just made me burst out laughing. Good guess! But I wouldn't do that to Paula, cos I'm a fellow athlete now, enn'I? Well, kind of. Well, all right, not at all.
You've got me thinking though. I will be looking for some publicity grabbing stunts this summer, what with the new novel out. Perhaps streaking at the Men's Final at Wimbledon?

Clare, oh, I just loved those Five Find-Outers books too - Fatty was ace! We've got a few here and I all but begged my daughter to let me read them to her. Only thing is, she's now got a cod-1950s way of speaking - it's all "Oh, blow!" and "You beast!" Still, could be worse, I suppose...
Glad you liked Mister Pip. That shocking bit in the middle.... oh my God. Did not enjoy that at all. Horrible. But a great book.

Hi Kate K, bit late for Beijing sadly otherwise I reckon I'd have been in with a shout... at the sumo-wrestling perhaps... Nah. Not really. I have toyed with a 10k run but it's not that. (maybe next year.) Any more guesses?

Ahhh L-Plate, it's very tempting! But no, it's not that...

Yay! You are liking the book! Now I will go to my lair and think about just how throughly bossy I am and how not be next time.

Lucy Diamond said...

Hi Girl, no, no, no! Bossy was just what I needed. I am so glad I was bossed!! In fact, I will be recommending you to all and sundry as a book-guru life coach... you'll make a fortune!

"That shocking bit in the middle.... oh my God."

Yes, but not wholly surprising. Up til then I'd been surprised at how little there was of that nature, given the political context. I was expecting something awful to happen at some point, although it was worse than I imagined. I too found it hard to read.

*Gasp* You're going on Gladiators??
Please tell me you are:-)

delighted you are enjoying it. Teach you not to be a scaredy cat next time. And as for Kiki, let's not forget Hector's House, was there not a Kiki (possible slutty next door cat, or was it sensible aproned wife??) bouncing about in that, too. Adored the Castle of Adventure etc and youngest has just ploughed through them all. Super.

Lucy Diamond said...

Clare - yes, I knew something horrible would happen but all the same... so brutal and shocking. Brrr.

Lane - lol!! I so wish I could say yes to Gladiators. But no...

Milla - absolutely, I have learned a valuable life lesson. Hector's House...hmmm, there was that stringy mop thing, wasn't there? My memory's a bit duff on the slutty Kiki though - sure you're not just making that up?! ;)
