Cracking

A few years ago, when I heard the news that Any Way You Want Me had been accepted for publication, Lovely Partner and I celebrated with a bottle of cava and a Chinese takeaway that evening (we were so skint at the time that this was the height of Splashing Out). We got a bit pissed and made such a racket cheering and laughing that we woke Eldest Daughter who came downstairs and started tucking into the prawn crackers. "Ooooh, these crisps are nice," she said, cramming the last handful into her mouth. "Are there any more?"
"I'll tell you what, love, when Mummy gets another book deal, we'll go wild and get another packet," Lovely Partner promised drunkenly.

Well...
Can you guess what I'm going to say?
I heard on Thursday that Pan had made me an offer for a new two-book deal, and it was all confirmed yesterday. Two more Lucy Diamond novels! I am so so SO happy and chuffed and excited. Prawn crackers are on me!

Well done you. Fantastic news!

p.s. Can I ask a question? Is this something the publishers negociate after you've delivered your second book or before? Just curious how the process works!

Oh thanks everyone!! I am sending virtual prawn crackers to all of you - and go on, then, as you're all so lovely, some virtual bubbly too. Cheers!
I am so chuffed, you know. It almost feels more exciting than that first book deal - it feels like proper validation that I Can Write. And ooooh it means I'll have four novels published. FOUR!!!!
Ahhh, prawn crackers have never tasted so delicious!

:)

PS Cal, the deal was done on the strength of the Novel 3 work-in-progress (about half the novel plus synopsis for the rest) and a synopsis for a fourth book. Is that what you meant?

Ahh, life is good. The rustling of prawn cracker packets will forever remind me of this day!

Well done, you bloody star, you! Thrilled for you. Hey, you might even consider branching out and investing in a packet of poppadums or something as well?? Do you mind if I ask how you got started with all this - did you submit blind, or get an agent, or what? (oops, too late, I've asked!)

Rosie said...

Congratulations, how exciting! Any Champers to go with the crackers??

Sarah*G* said...

Yay!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations to you!
Prawn Crackers all round!
I do hope you gave eldest some!!

Lucy Diamond said...

Oh thanks Milla - and yes, poppadoms might be good... I am waist deep in empty prawn cracker bags by now...
I don't mind you asking at all how I got started. I got an agent, basically, who did all the legwork and negotiated the deal. As I would have said yes to an advance consisting of a fiver with a Crunchie thrown in as a bonus, I'd say an agent is a very good person to have on your side!

Hi Rosie - what the hell, the kids are in bed (almost), let's have some champers - cheers!

Lucy Diamond said...

Oh Sarah - you sneaked through when I wasn't looking! Thank you, thank you, thank you for all those exclamation marks of joy!!! And yes, I've saved some prawn crackers for my eldest. One or two... :)

LOL! Careful, someone might take you up on that!

Huge congratulations honey.

Leigh said...

Lucy, this is FANTASTIC!!!!
Really excited!!!!!

So... do we send the prawn-cracker-bills directly to you, or do you multi-published authors have accountants to handle this sort of thing?

(Congratulations!)

Lucy Diamond said...

Michelle - I did wonder whether that was a stupid thing to write after seeing the 'internet house parties' on the news a few months ago. Luckily I managed to send all the teenage gatecrashers away with a handful of prawn crackers each. ;)
House party now over, though, I'm afraid. Tough luck if you missed it!

Caroline - yep, classy, that's me! Glad someone has noticed at last!

Leigh - thank you!! Your prawn crackers are in the post. :)

Thanks Kate!

Well done! I always thought that I'd be green with envy hearing about the book deals of other writers, but I'm tickled pink for you. When everyone and their dog is telling us that getting an agent and getting signed to a deal is so difficult, it's nice to hear that one of us has actually done it.......twice. Pour yourself another glass!

Lucy Diamond said...

Oh Helen, that's so nice of you. Thank you.
